Villa Kérylos — Restored Ancient Greek Villa in France

Being exactly halfway down the coast between Nice and Monaco, through the mountainous scenery of the French Riviera lies at the rocky tip of the Bay of Ants a masterpiece. In this strategic location sits Villa Kerylos; a reproduction of a Greek villa on the island of Delos dating from the 2nd century.

French archeologist Theodore Reinach purchased land surrounded on three sides by the sea on the tip of the Baie des Fourmis, offering stunning views over both Cap Ferrat to the west and the Italian coastline to the east.

Kerylos meaning halcyon or kingfisher, which in Greek mythology was considered a sea swallow (a bird) of good omen.

The villa was built in a coastal Ancient Greek Revival style. The interior integrated influences from Rome, Pompeii and Egypt. Stucco bas-reliefs were created by sculptor Paul Jean-Bapiste Gascq. Starting construction in 1902, it took six years to complete.
