The National Library Of Greece
With a history of over two centuries, housing over 1 million books and magazines, handwritten letters dating back between the 9th and 19th centuries, and 5,500 Greek manuscripts which is one of the greatest collection of Greek scrips; the National Library of Greece bridges the past, the present and future, anchoring Greece’s rich heritage within its marble walls.
For 400 years Greece was under Turkish rule, until the revolution broke out, leading to their independence as late as 1823. The country's first governor of the free nation founded the capital in Aegina, building a central school, a museum, and a ‘deposit of books’ within a huge orphanage. A decade later, the National Library of Greece became an independent institution and moved to its current home in Athens. Its striking architecture is a nod to classical Greek and Renaissance styles, while the interior houses climate-controlled rooms that preserve rare books and manuscripts.
Libraries are celebrated for their deep wealth of knowledge, and the way they tell a story; IASON ROUVAS reflects the aesthetics of each literary era (Renaissance, Victorian, or Modernist). Much like a library’s architecture, Rouvas translates those elements into patterns, and structured lines in his pieces.
