837 Washington — A Morris Adjmi Design

Morris Adjmi took on the project of repurposing a piece of New York on an older, more picturesque street that defines Greenwich Village. A 2-story structure built back in 1938 during the last major phase of the historic development of the Gansevoort Market area — 837 Washington marked the completion of the West Side Elevated Line.

To keep the gritty charm and sense of time of the structure, the project was approached as two distinct architectural identities — a striking steel and glass tower; and the other, a restored modern-style brick warehouse fitting right into the neighborhood.

Inside, the building houses a dynamic mix of commercial and retail spaces in an airy, open floor plan. The design includes a fresh vibe of a two-tone brick facade and the spontaneous setup of garage doors transformed into a row of storefront windows. The tower built onto the building’s base is strategically set back, giving room for imaginative depth to take the forefront.

One of Rouvas’ most loved designs in Manhattan where each element of 837 Washington enhances the area’s industrial heritage while embodying modern sophistication.
